Volumetric weight explained

Carriers charge for the space a parcel occupies, not just its mass. Volumetric weight is length x width x height divided by a dimensional divisor (5000 is the common standard), and the carrier bills whichever is greater: actual or volumetric.

A big box of pillows can cost triple its scale weight, which is why right-sizing packaging saves real money.

Getting an accurate estimate

Measure the packed parcel, not the product, since the box determines the bill. Enter your carrier's per-kilo rate for the destination zone and pick the divisor your carrier publishes.

The result is an estimate: fuel surcharges, remote-area fees, and insurance are not included.

Shipping Cost Calc FAQs

What is the dimensional divisor?
The number carriers divide cubic volume by to get volumetric weight. 5000 is standard for many postal services; express couriers often use 6000.
Why was I charged more than the scale weight?
Your parcel's volumetric weight exceeded its actual weight, so the carrier billed the greater of the two. Smaller boxes fix this.
Should I measure in cm or inches?
This tool uses cm and kg. For inches and pounds, convert first: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 lb = 0.454 kg.
Does it include fuel surcharges?
No. Surcharges, insurance, and remote-area fees vary by carrier and are added on top of the base estimate.
Can I compare carriers?
Yes. Run the numbers once, then swap in each carrier's per-kg rate and divisor to compare side by side.
