How the counts work

Words are runs of non-whitespace characters, so hyphenated words count as one. Sentences end on ., ! or ?. Paragraphs are non-empty lines. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, the average adult reading speed, rounded up.

Common limits for reference: a tweet is 280 characters, a typical blog paragraph runs 40 to 60 words, and most college essays ask for 500 to 1,000 words.

Why count locally

  • No uploads: drafts, manuscripts and private notes stay on your device.
  • Instant: counts update on every keystroke with no round trip.
  • Works offline once the page has loaded.

Word counter FAQs

How does the word counter count words?
It splits your text on whitespace, so any run of non-space characters counts as one word. Hyphenated words count as one word; numbers count as words too.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counting happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute and rounds up to the next whole minute.
What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?
Characters counts every letter, space, punctuation mark and line break. Characters without spaces strips all whitespace first, which is the number many school and publishing limits use.
