What safety stock protects against

Safety stock is a buffer for two surprises: demand spiking above average, and suppliers delivering late. The formula sizes the buffer from the worst demand and worst lead time you have actually seen.

Balancing stockouts and cash

More buffer means fewer stockouts but more cash tied up. Review maximums quarterly: one freak week should not permanently inflate your buffer, and steady growth should raise averages.

Safety Stock Calc FAQs

How do you calculate safety stock?
Multiply max daily demand by max lead time, then subtract average daily demand times average lead time. 150 x 10 - 100 x 7 = 800 units.
What is the reorder point formula?
Reorder point = (average daily demand x average lead time) + safety stock. Order when inventory falls to this level.
What if my safety stock is zero?
It means your maximums equal your averages, so demand and lead times never vary. That is rare; double-check the maximums reflect real peaks.
Does this work for seasonal products?
Use the peak season figures for demand and lead time, or recalculate per season. Annual averages understate the buffer you need in peak months.
