What dimensional weight means

Couriers charge by whichever is greater: actual weight or dimensional weight. Dimensional weight estimates how much space your box occupies on a truck or plane, so light but bulky parcels cost more than their scale weight suggests.

The formula is length times width times height divided by a courier divisor, commonly 5000 for centimeters.

Using the calculator

Measure the outside of the packed box, not the product inside. Choose the divisor your courier uses; express services sometimes use 4000, and US carriers use 139 or 166 for inches.

Enter the actual weight too and the tool shows the billable weight directly, which is the number that appears on your shipping quote.

Package Volume Calc FAQs

Why is my shipping quote higher than the scale weight?
Your parcel is bulky for its weight, so the courier bills dimensional weight instead. Compress packaging or use a smaller box to lower it.
Which divisor should I choose?
Use the one your courier publishes. 5000 is the most common for cm; US domestic carriers often use 139 for inches. When in doubt, ask the courier.
Do I measure the product or the box?
The box, outside dimensions. Couriers measure the packed parcel, and padding adds centimeters that count.
Does shape matter?
Couriers measure the smallest box the item fits in, so irregular shapes are billed on their bounding box. The calculator assumes a rectangular box.
Is this an official quote?
No. It matches standard courier math, but final rates depend on the carrier, service level and surcharges.
