What net profit tells you

Net profit is the bottom line: revenue minus every cost, including COGS, rent, salaries, marketing and other operating expenses. It is the money the business actually keeps, and the number owners, lenders and investors watch first.

Net margin benchmarks

Net margin is net profit as a share of revenue. Healthy small businesses often land between 10 and 20 percent, though it varies widely by industry. If your net margin is thin while gross margin is strong, the problem is overhead, not pricing.

Net Profit Calc FAQs

How do you calculate net profit?
Subtract all expenses from revenue. With $10,000 revenue, $6,000 COGS and $2,500 operating expenses, net profit is $1,500.
What is the net profit formula?
Net profit = revenue - COGS - operating expenses. Net margin = (net profit / revenue) x 100. The example above gives a 15% net margin.
Gross profit vs net profit, which matters more?
Both. Gross profit shows pricing power and production efficiency; net profit shows the real bottom line after overhead. A business can have strong gross profit and still lose money on high operating costs.
Should taxes be included in net profit?
Strictly, net profit (net income) is after taxes too. This calculator stops at operating expenses for planning purposes; subtract your tax separately for the accounting figure.
