Why gross fee misleads

A $1,000 project at 10% platform fee and 15% tax nets $765, not $850: the cuts compound (0.90 x 0.85 = 0.765). Always price from the net you need, then gross it up: required fee = target net / 0.765.

Pricing with fees in mind

Add platform fees into your quotes explicitly or bake them into the rate. Underpricing by the fee percentage is the most common reason freelancers feel busy but broke.

Freelance Fee Calc FAQs

How much do I keep from a freelance project?
Multiply the fee by (1 - platform fee) then by (1 - tax rate). $1,000 at 10% platform and 15% tax = $1,000 x 0.90 x 0.85 = $765.
Should tax apply before or after platform fees?
Usually after: platforms remit the net to you and you are taxed on what you receive. This calculator applies tax to the post-fee amount.
How do I gross up a target net income?
Divide the net you want by (1 - platform/100) x (1 - tax/100). To keep $765 at 10% and 15%, quote $765 / 0.765 = $1,000.
What about fixed platform fees?
Convert them to a percentage of the project (fee / project x 100) and enter that, or subtract them from the project fee first and use 0% here.
