The 4% rule behind FIRE

The FIRE number is 25x annual expenses: at a 4% yearly withdrawal, the portfolio funds your lifestyle indefinitely in most historical scenarios. Spend $40,000 a year and the target is $1,000,000 invested.

What moves the date most

Savings rate dominates: at 50% of income saved, FIRE often arrives in under 20 years; at 10%, it takes decades. Returns help, but contributions and lower expenses move the finish line far more.

Retirement FIRE Calc FAQs

How do you calculate your FIRE number?
Multiply annual expenses by 25. $40,000 yearly spending needs $1,000,000 invested, which supports $40,000/year at a 4% withdrawal rate.
What is the 4% rule?
A rule of thumb from retirement research: withdrawing 4% of a stock-heavy portfolio yearly has historically lasted 30+ years. Conservative planners use 3 to 3.5%.
What return should I assume?
7% is a common nominal assumption for stocks (about 5% after inflation). Use real returns for planning in today's money, or nominal for future dollars.
Does FIRE include my house?
Usually not: the FIRE number counts invested assets that generate returns, not your primary home, since you cannot spend home equity without selling.
