How many months to cover

Advisors suggest 3 to 6 months of essential expenses: 3 for stable dual incomes, 6 for freelancers or single earners, more for volatile industries. Count rent, food, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments, not luxuries.

Where to keep it

The fund must be liquid and separate: a high-yield savings account, not stocks or crypto. Its job is to be there during a job loss or emergency, not to grow.

Emergency Fund Calc FAQs

How much should my emergency fund be?
Multiply essential monthly expenses by 3 to 6. At $3,000/month expenses, the target is $9,000 to $18,000 depending on your job stability.
What counts as monthly expenses?
Essentials only: housing, food, transport, insurance, utilities and minimum debt payments. Subscriptions and dining out do not belong in the survival number.
Should I invest my emergency fund?
No. Market drops often coincide with job losses, exactly when you need the money. Keep it in an instantly accessible savings account.
What if I cannot save the monthly amount?
Lower the target to 1 to 2 months first: even a small buffer prevents most debt spirals. Then grow it gradually as income allows.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation happens in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you enter leaves your device.
