What EBITDA measures

EBITDA strips out interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to show the cash earnings of the core operation. It lets you compare companies with different debt levels, tax situations and asset ages on equal footing.

EBITDA limits

It ignores real costs: interest must be paid, and assets must eventually be replaced (depreciation is a placeholder for that). Use EBITDA alongside operating income and cash flow, never alone.

EBITDA Calculator FAQs

How do you calculate EBITDA?
Revenue minus COGS minus operating expenses, excluding depreciation and amortization. $1M - $600k - $250k = $150,000 EBITDA.
What is the EBITDA formula with net income?
EBITDA = net income + interest + taxes + depreciation + amortization. Both routes should reconcile to the same number.
What is a good EBITDA margin?
It varies by industry: 10 to 20% is common for healthy businesses, software often exceeds 30%. Compare within your sector.
EBITDA vs operating income?
Operating income (EBIT) subtracts depreciation too. EBITDA adds it back, so it is always higher and closer to operating cash flow.
