The costs beginners forget

Product cost is only the start. Shipping, ad spend per order, platform fees and payment fees each take a cut. A $39.99 sale with $12 product cost can still lose money once $10 of ads and 5% fees land.

Making the math work

Aim for at least 25 to 30% margin per order after everything. Levers: negotiate supplier cost, raise perceived value to support higher prices, and push ad cost per order down with better creative.

Dropshipping Profit FAQs

How do you calculate dropshipping profit?
Subtract product cost, shipping, ad cost per order and percentage fees from the selling price. $39.99 - $12 - $4 - $10 - $2.00 fees = $11.99 profit.
What is a good profit margin for dropshipping?
25 to 30%+ per order after all costs. Below 15% the business rarely survives refunds, chargebacks and ad volatility.
Should ad cost be per order or total?
Per order: divide total ad spend by orders in the same period. That blends naturally with the other per-order costs here.
Do I include subscription fees?
Spread fixed monthly fees across expected monthly orders and add them as a per-order cost for the honest figure.
