What dividend yield tells you

Yield is the cash return on the current price: a $2 dividend on a $50 share is 4%. It lets you compare income stocks directly, but a very high yield can signal a price that has crashed on bad news.

Yield on cost vs current yield

Current yield uses today's price; yield on cost uses what you paid. A stock bought at $25 paying $2 yields 8% on your cost even while new buyers get 4%: long holders compound income beautifully.

Dividend Yield Calc FAQs

How do you calculate dividend yield?
Divide the annual dividend per share by the current share price, times 100. $2 dividend on a $50 share = 4% yield.
What is a good dividend yield?
2 to 5% is typical for quality dividend stocks. Above 7% demands scrutiny: check the payout ratio and whether the dividend has been cut before.
Are dividends guaranteed?
No. Companies can cut or suspend dividends anytime, usually when profits fall. Yield history and payout ratio hint at safety.
Do I pay tax on dividends?
Usually yes, though rates and treatment vary by country. Check your local rules; qualified dividends often get preferential rates.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation happens in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you enter leaves your device.
