Why churn compounds

Losing 5% of customers monthly means keeping only 54% after a year (0.95^12). Cutting monthly churn from 5% to 3% keeps 70% instead, which is like gaining months of acquisition for free. Retention is the cheapest growth lever.

Churn benchmarks

Consumer subscriptions often see 5 to 10% monthly churn; B2B SaaS targets under 2% monthly or 10 to 15% annually. Always compare the same period: monthly churn annualizes to roughly 12x only as an approximation.

Churn Rate Calc FAQs

How do you calculate churn rate?
Divide customers lost in the period by customers at the start, times 100. Losing 50 of 1,000 customers is 5% churn.
What is the difference between churn and retention?
They sum to 100%: 5% churn means 95% retention. Churn frames the loss, retention frames what you kept.
Should new customers count in churn?
No. Standard churn divides lost customers by the starting base, excluding customers gained mid-period, so growth does not mask losses.
What is revenue churn?
The same math on recurring revenue instead of headcount: MRR lost / MRR at start. It captures downgrades too, which customer churn misses.
