How auto loan math works

Each monthly payment first covers that month's interest on the remaining balance, then reduces the principal. Early payments are mostly interest; later ones mostly principal. A bigger down payment cuts both the payment and the total interest.

Shorter term vs lower payment

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest substantially. Compare the total interest figure, not just the monthly amount, when choosing between 4, 5 and 7 year terms.

Auto Loan Calc FAQs

How do you calculate a car payment?
Use the amortization formula on the amount borrowed (price minus down payment) with the monthly rate and number of months. This calculator does it instantly.
How much car can I afford?
A common rule: total car costs under 15% of monthly take-home pay, with at least 10 to 20% down. Check the monthly payment here against your budget.
Does a bigger down payment help?
Yes twice: it lowers the amount borrowed (smaller payment) and reduces total interest. It also protects you from owing more than the car is worth.
Should I take the longest term?
Only if you must: longer terms mean much more total interest and years of payments on a depreciating car. The shortest term you can afford is usually cheapest.
