The conversion math

Everything flows from one assumption: 52 working weeks per year.

Annual = Hourly x Hours/week x 52
Hourly = Annual / 52 / Hours/week

Weekly pay is hourly times hours per week; biweekly doubles that; monthly divides the annual figure by 12.

What this leaves out

  • Overtime is paid at 1.5x in the US for hours over 40; use the overtime calculator for that.
  • Unpaid time off: 2 unpaid weeks a year cuts about 4% off these figures; use 50 weeks instead of 52 if that fits.
  • Taxes and benefits are not included; these are gross figures before anything is taken out.
  • Part-time schedules: the math works the same, just enter your actual hours per week.

Hourly to salary FAQs

How do you convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly wage by hours worked per week, then by 52 weeks. For example, $25/hour at 40 hours a week is 25 x 40 x 52 = $52,000 per year before taxes and deductions.
How do you convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by 52 weeks and then by hours worked per week. A $52,000 salary at 40 hours a week is 52,000 / 52 / 40 = $25 per hour.
Does this include overtime or taxes?
No. The conversion assumes straight time for every hour, 52 working weeks a year, and gross pay before taxes, benefits and deductions. Use the overtime and paycheck calculators for those pieces.
