How the conversion works

This tool runs FFmpeg, the industry-standard video toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it executes inside your browser. Your clip is trimmed to the chosen start and duration, reduced to the selected frame rate and width, then encoded with a two-pass palette for clean colors.

The engine download is about 30 MB on first use and is cached afterwards. Your video is never uploaded.

Keep GIFs small

GIF is an old, inefficient format: every extra second, frame and pixel multiplies the file size. For shareable GIFs keep clips under 5 seconds, 15 fps or less, and 320 to 480 px wide.

If the result is still huge, trim the duration first, then lower the frame rate, then the width, in that order of impact.

Video GIF Converter FAQs

Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg runs as WebAssembly in your browser and the whole conversion happens on your device. Your video never leaves it.
Why does the converter take so long to load the first time?
The FFmpeg engine is about 30 MB and downloads once, then your browser caches it. Later visits start almost instantly.
Which video formats can I convert?
Anything FFmpeg reads in the browser build: MP4, WebM and MOV work best. Very long files may exhaust browser memory, so keep clips short.
How long a clip can I convert?
The tool caps duration at 30 seconds, but for reasonable file sizes stay under 5 to 10 seconds. Longer clips risk slow conversion or out-of-memory errors.
Why is my GIF file so large?
GIF stores every frame as an image with only 256 colors. Shorten the clip, drop to 10 fps, or pick a smaller width. If size matters more than compatibility, use MP4 instead of GIF.
