How distance is calculated

Coordinate mode uses the Haversine formula, which measures the great-circle distance between two latitude/longitude points on the Earth. It is the true straight-line distance, the shortest path over the surface.

Odometer mode simply subtracts the start reading from the end reading, giving the exact driven distance for trips you already completed or are tracking.

Fuel and time estimates

Fuel needed comes from your consumption figure (L/100 km) times distance, and cost multiplies that by your pump price. Driving time divides distance by your expected average speed including traffic slowdowns.

Straight-line distances understate road travel, so add 20 to 40 percent when planning fuel stops on winding routes.

Trip Distance Calc FAQs

How do I find coordinates?
Right-click any point in Google Maps and the coordinates appear, or tap and hold on mobile. Paste latitude and longitude into the fields.
Why is the real drive longer than the estimate?
Coordinate mode measures straight-line distance. Roads curve around terrain and cities, so actual routes run 20-40% longer.
What average speed should I use?
Highway-heavy trips average 70-90 km/h with stops; city driving is closer to 30-40. Be conservative for arrival planning.
Can I use miles?
The distance shows both km and miles. Enter consumption in L/100 km; convert MPG first with a fuel economy converter if needed.
Is my location data sent anywhere?
No. Coordinates are processed locally in your browser and never leave your device.
