The sepia recipe

Sepia remaps every pixel through a warm brown matrix: highlights turn creamy, midtones go amber, and shadows deepen to chocolate. It mimics how silver-based photo prints aged over decades, which is why it reads instantly as vintage.

When sepia shines

Portraits, weddings, and old-building shots gain a timeless feel. Try 60 to 80% for a subtle warm grade that keeps some natural color, or 100% for the full antique print look.

Sepia Filter FAQs

What does a sepia filter do?
It replaces the colors of a photo with warm brown tones, imitating aged photographic prints from the early 1900s.
Can I make the effect weaker?
Yes. The intensity slider blends the sepia tone with the original colors, so 50% gives a gentle warm grade.
Is sepia the same as grayscale?
No. Grayscale removes all color for black and white. Sepia also removes the original colors but adds warm brown tones on top.
Which photos look best with sepia?
Portraits, landscapes with sky, and architecture. Photos with strong existing color casts can look muddy, so desaturate them slightly first.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The filter is applied with the canvas API entirely in your browser.
