How US sales tax works
The US has no national sales tax. Each state sets its own base rate, and many counties and cities stack local taxes on top. The rate you actually pay depends on where the sale happens, and sometimes on what you buy: groceries, clothing and digital goods are treated differently in several states.
States with no sales tax
Alaska: no statewide tax, but some local areas charge one.
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon: no statewide and no local sales tax.
Even in these states, excise taxes on fuel, lodging and rentals may still apply.
Of statewide base rates, California is highest at 7.25%, followed by Indiana, Mississippi, Rhode Island and Tennessee at 7%. With local taxes added, combined rates in some cities pass 10%.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Note that Alaska allows local sales taxes, so some Alaskan towns still charge one.
Do online purchases charge sales tax?
Usually yes. Most states require sellers with enough sales in the state to collect tax based on the delivery address, which can include local taxes.
