How prediction works

The Riegel formula (T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06) scales a known performance to other distances. It is well validated for trained runners across 5K to marathon. Enter your best recent time at any of the four distances and all four predictions update, each with its required average pace.

Using the pace splits

The marathon splits table shows even pacing every 5 km — the strategy behind most personal bests. Aim to hit each split within a few seconds; banking time early usually backfires after 30 km.

Running Calculator FAQs

How accurate is the Riegel formula?
Within a few percent for trained runners on similar courses. It assumes equivalent fitness and conditions — heat, hills and wind all shift real times.
Can I predict from a non-race time trial?
Yes, if it was a true maximal effort. Predictions from easy runs will be far too optimistic.
Why 1.06 as the exponent?
It is Riegel's empirically fitted value from world-record data. Some coaches use 1.05-1.08 for specific populations, but 1.06 is the standard.
Does it work for ultramarathons?
Not reliably. The formula breaks down past the marathon as fatigue, fueling and terrain dominate.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is computed locally in your browser.
