Why even splits win

Physiology favors steady effort: surges burn glycogen fast and spike lactate. Elites negative split by seconds, but for most runners an even pace plan beats the classic fly and die by minutes.

Using the split table

Each row shows the cumulative clock time you should see at that kilometer marker. Glance at your watch each km: ahead of the split means ease off, behind means gently close the gap over the next two.

Running Splits Calc FAQs

What are running splits?
Your time at each kilometer (or mile) of a race. Even splits mean every kilometer takes the same time, the most efficient pacing strategy.
Should I aim for even or negative splits?
Even for most runners. Negative splits (second half faster) are ideal but hard to judge; start even and push only if you feel strong late.
How do I use splits with a GPS watch?
Set the watch to show lap pace per km and compare against the target pace here. The cumulative table also works with course kilometer markers.
Do splits account for hills?
No, they assume flat terrain. On hills, run even effort instead of even pace: slower uphill, faster down, same breathing.
What if I miss an early split?
Do not sprint to catch up. Ease back to target pace and accept the small loss; panicking early ruins the whole race.
