How scaling works

The tool divides target servings by original servings to get a scale factor, then multiplies every quantity by it. The clever part is the output formatting: instead of 0.75 cups it shows 3/4, and instead of 1.33 it shows 1 1/3, because nobody measures 0.67 teaspoons.

Lines without quantities

Ingredients like salt to taste or a pinch of pepper have no number to scale. The tool detects lines that do not start with a quantity and passes them through unchanged, so your seasoning instincts stay yours.

Recipe Scaler FAQs

What formats can it parse?
Whole numbers (2), decimals (1.5), simple fractions (1/2) and mixed numbers (1 1/2), followed by the rest of the ingredient line.
Why are results shown as fractions?
Kitchen measuring uses fractions, not decimals. The tool rounds to the nearest common cooking fraction for quantities you can actually measure.
Does scaling work for baking?
For quantities, yes. But baking is chemistry: leavening, pan sizes and bake times do not scale perfectly linearly, so use judgment for large changes.
What about ingredients without amounts?
Lines that do not start with a number, like salt to taste, are carried through unchanged.
Can I scale down as well as up?
Yes. Set target servings lower than original and everything scales down proportionally.
