How the compressor shrinks your PDF

This tool rebuilds your PDF with a modern object-stream structure and drops leftover metadata and unused objects that bloat files edited many times. Image-heavy PDFs shrink the most when the source contains uncompressed or duplicated resources.

Everything happens locally in your browser, so even confidential documents are safe to compress here. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

When compression barely helps

Some PDFs are already optimized, for example files exported with aggressive settings or made mostly of vector text. In that case the savings may be small, often under 5 percent, which is normal and means the file was already lean.

For the biggest savings, compress images before adding them to the PDF, or print the document to PDF again with lower image quality in your PDF software.

PDF Compressor FAQs

Will compressing reduce the quality of my PDF?
This tool rebuilds the file structure without re-encoding images, so visual quality stays the same. It mainly removes wasted space from repeated edits and metadata.
Is there a file size limit?
The tool works in your browser memory, so very large files (several hundred MB) may be slow or fail on low-memory devices. Most everyday PDFs under 50 MB compress in seconds.
Does it work on password-protected PDFs?
No. Encrypted PDFs cannot be opened by the browser engine used here. Remove the password in your PDF software first, then compress.
Why did my file get slightly bigger?
Already-optimized PDFs sometimes grow a fraction when rebuilt with object streams. If the result is larger, just keep your original file.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. The entire process runs in your browser with JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device.
