How it works

Enter the bed's length and width (feet or meters) and how deep you want the mulch in inches. The tool computes the volume in cubic feet and cubic yards, then converts that into a bag count assuming standard 2-cubic-foot bags, so you know exactly what to buy whether you shop bagged or bulk.

How deep should mulch be

Three inches is the sweet spot for most beds: enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without suffocating plant roots. Go thinner (2 inches) around shallow-rooted plants and thicker (4 inches) on paths. The calculator works with any depth you enter.

Mulch Calculator FAQs

How deep should I spread mulch?
3 inches is standard for garden beds. Use 2 inches near shallow roots and up to 4 inches on walkways.
Should I buy bags or bulk?
Bags suit small beds; bulk (by the cubic yard) is cheaper for large areas. The calculator gives you both numbers so you can compare prices.
How many bags are in a cubic yard?
About 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags make one cubic yard. The tool rounds the bag count up so you do not run short.
Does mulch settle over time?
Yes, it compacts and decomposes. Buying 5-10% extra covers settling and lets you top up thin spots.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up, running entirely in your browser.
