How recipe scaling works

The tool computes a scale factor, guests divided by base servings, and multiplies every ingredient amount by it. A recipe for 4 scaled to 10 guests multiplies everything by 2.5.

Units stay as you typed them (grams, cups, tablespoons), so the scaled list reads naturally as a shopping list.

Scaling tips

Seasoning does not scale perfectly: start with about 75 percent of the scaled salt and spices, then adjust to taste. Cooking time also grows slower than portions, so check doneness rather than just multiplying minutes.

For very large groups, split cooking across two batches instead of one giant pot; heat distributes more evenly and results are more reliable.

Meal Portion Calc FAQs

Do spices scale linearly?
Not quite. Scale them at about three-quarters of the factor and adjust to taste, since oversized seasoning is the classic big-batch mistake.
Does cooking time scale too?
Only loosely. A doubled recipe needs more time, but not double. Judge by temperature and texture, not the clock alone.
Can I use cups instead of grams?
Yes. Any unit works because the tool only multiplies the numbers you enter. Keep one unit per ingredient row.
What if my recipe serves a range like 4-6?
Enter the middle (5) as base servings. The result will be close enough for planning portions.
Is my recipe saved?
No. Ingredients live only on the page. Copy the shopping list to keep it.
