Characters as pixels

The photo is shrunk to your chosen character width, then each pixel's brightness picks one character from a ramp ordered dark to light. Dense characters like @ and # stand in for shadows, while spaces and dots become highlights. Height is squashed to 55% because text characters are taller than they are wide.

Choosing a character set

The standard ramp is readable everywhere. The detailed ramp uses 70 characters for smoother shading in wide art. Blocks use shade glyphs for a chunkier poster look. Invert the mapping if your art will sit on a light background.

Image to ASCII Art FAQs

What width should I use?
100 characters suits chat apps and code comments. 200+ looks great on wide screens but may wrap on mobile. The preview uses a tiny font so wide art fits.
Why does the art look stretched?
It should not: the height is auto-scaled to 55% to compensate for tall text characters. If it still looks off, your viewer may not use a monospace font.
Can I use this in Discord or WhatsApp?
Yes. Paste it inside a code block (triple backticks) so the app keeps the monospace font and spacing intact.
What is the invert option for?
Normal mapping assumes dark text on a light page. Invert it when the art will appear as light text on a dark background, like terminal themes.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs on an offscreen canvas in your browser.
