How rotation works

Your image is drawn onto a canvas with a rotation transform applied, then exported as a new file in PNG, JPEG or WebP. Each press of a rotate button turns the picture another quarter turn, and the preview always shows the current angle.

Everything runs in your browser, so your photos stay private.

A note on quality

Rotating by exact quarter turns is lossless in geometry, but re-encoding to JPEG or WebP applies fresh compression. If you plan further edits, download as PNG to keep maximum quality and convert to JPEG only at the end.

Photos that look sideways usually just have a wrong orientation flag; this tool bakes the correct orientation into the pixels.

Image Rotator FAQs

Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The rotation happens on a canvas in your browser and the download is generated locally. Your image never leaves your device.
Which formats can I rotate?
Anything your browser can display: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and more. You can download the result as PNG, JPEG or WebP.
Why is my photo sideways in the first place?
Phones store an orientation flag in EXIF instead of rotating pixels. Some viewers ignore the flag, showing the raw sideways image. This tool bakes the rotation into the actual pixels so it displays correctly everywhere.
Can I rotate by a custom angle like 45 degrees?
This tool does exact quarter turns, which keep every pixel sharp. Arbitrary angles need resampling and leave transparent corners, so they are intentionally not offered here.
Will rotating reduce image quality?
The geometry is exact, but saving as JPEG or WebP re-compresses the file. Choose PNG output for maximum quality, or accept one JPEG generation, which is invisible in practice.
