What DPI means for printing

DPI (dots per inch) tells you how densely your image's pixels are packed on paper. The same 3000 x 2000 pixel photo prints razor-sharp at 10 x 8 inches (300 DPI) but looks soft stretched to poster size. This calculator converts between pixels, physical size and DPI so you know exactly what to expect before you print.

How to use both modes

Mode A answers "how sharp will this print be?" from your pixel dimensions and intended print size. Mode B answers "how big can I print?" from pixels and a target DPI. Uploading an image fills in its true pixel dimensions automatically, so you never have to guess.

DPI Calculator FAQs

What DPI do I need for a good print?
300 DPI is the standard for crisp photo prints. Large posters viewed from a distance look fine at 150 DPI, while 72 DPI is screen resolution and usually too low for print.
Can I increase DPI to improve a blurry photo?
No. DPI only describes how pixels map to paper. Raising the DPI number without adding pixels just makes the print smaller. True detail has to be captured or upscaled.
Does this tool change my image?
No, it only calculates. Your uploaded image is read locally to get its dimensions and is never modified or uploaded.
Why do width and height DPI differ?
They differ when the print's aspect ratio does not match the image's. For undistorted prints, keep the print size proportional to the pixel dimensions.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes digital images, DPI (dots per inch) describes printer output. For this calculator they are used interchangeably, as most people do.
