Render, desaturate, rebuild

Each page is rendered to an image with pdf.js, every pixel is converted to luminance for true grayscale, and the pages are reassembled into a fresh PDF with pdf-lib. Vector text becomes raster images, which guarantees identical appearance on every printer.

Quality vs file size

Standard renders at 1.5x for smaller files, fine for drafts. High renders at 2.2x so small text stays crisp. Grayscale JPEG pages are far smaller than color originals either way.

Grayscale PDF FAQs

Why convert a PDF to grayscale?
To print without wasting color ink, to meet black-and-white submission rules, or to make colorful charts readable on e-ink devices.
Will the text still be selectable?
No. Pages become grayscale images, so text cannot be selected or searched. Keep your original for digital reading.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes, perfectly. Scanned pages are already images, so they convert cleanly.
What about password-protected PDFs?
Encrypted PDFs usually fail to load. Remove the password first with the owner's permission.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Rendering and rebuilding happen entirely in your browser.
