How grayscale is computed

Each pixel's red, green, and blue channels are blended into a single luminance value that matches how human eyes perceive brightness, green counts most. That value replaces all three channels, producing a true monochrome image rather than a flat average.

Partial grayscale looks

At 100% you get classic black and white. Around 40 to 70% keeps a faded, vintage color hint that suits portraits and street photography. 0% is the untouched original.

Grayscale Filter FAQs

What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?
Grayscale keeps 256 shades of gray for smooth tones. Pure black and white (1-bit) keeps only two colors and looks harsh. This tool makes smooth grayscale.
Can I keep some color?
Yes. Lower the intensity to around 50% for a faded, desaturated look that keeps a hint of the original color.
Does this work on PNGs with transparency?
Yes. Transparency is preserved and only the visible colors are desaturated.
Why do my black and white photos look flat?
Try raising contrast after conversion. Grayscale removes color contrast, so tonal contrast matters more.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs on a canvas in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
