What flattening does

A fillable PDF stores field values separately from the page graphics. Flattening burns the current values into the page content stream and deletes the field objects, so the text can no longer be clicked or edited. Layout, fonts, and signatures stay exactly where they were.

When to flatten

Flatten before sending contracts, applications, and invoices so recipients cannot alter what you filled in. It also fixes printing issues where some viewers skip unflattened field values.

Flatten PDF Forms FAQs

Can flattened fields be edited again?
No. Flattening permanently merges field values into the page. Always keep a copy of the fillable original if you might need changes.
My PDF has no fields. What happens?
The tool reports 0 fields found and returns an identical copy. Nothing is changed.
Does flattening change the layout?
No. Fonts, positions, and page sizes are preserved; only the editability of fields is removed.
What about password-protected PDFs?
Encrypted PDFs may fail to load. Remove the password first with the owner's permission, then flatten.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The pdf-lib engine runs entirely in your browser.
