How duotone mapping works

The photo is first reduced to luminance, a single brightness value per pixel. Dark pixels are then painted with your shadow color, bright pixels with your highlight color, and everything between blends smoothly. Detail and contrast survive because the mapping follows the original tones.

Picking color pairs

High-contrast pairs look boldest: a near-black with a vivid accent is the classic music-poster style. Analogous pairs (navy and teal) feel calm. The strength slider lets you fade the effect back toward the original photo.

Duotone Filter FAQs

What is a duotone effect?
A photo recolored with exactly two colors: one maps to the shadows and dark areas, the other to the highlights and bright areas. It is popular in posters and brand graphics.
Which two colors work best?
A dark color plus a bright saturated color gives the strongest look. Try your brand's two main colors for marketing graphics.
Can I reduce the effect?
Yes. The strength slider mixes the duotone with the original photo, so 50% gives a subtle two-tone grade.
Does it work on any photo?
Yes, but high-contrast photos with clear light and dark areas produce the most dramatic duotones.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The pixel remapping runs in your browser via the canvas API.
