Two tones per key

DTMF stands for dual-tone multi-frequency: each key mixes one low tone (697 to 941 Hz) with one high tone (1209 to 1633 Hz). The pair is unique per key, which is how phone systems decode presses reliably even over noisy lines.

Testing uses

Developers use DTMF to test IVR menus, voicemail systems, and phone bots. Hold your phone near the speaker while playing a sequence to punch digits into automated systems hands-free.

DTMF Generator FAQs

What frequencies does each key use?
Rows use 697, 770, 852, 941 Hz and columns use 1209, 1336, 1477 Hz. Key 5, for example, is 770 + 1336 Hz.
Can I dial into automated phone menus?
Yes. Play the sequence near your phone's microphone during a call and the remote system hears the keypresses.
Why do some systems not recognize the tones?
Heavy speaker distortion or very low volume can confuse decoders. Raise volume to about 70% and hold the speaker close.
What are the * and # keys for?
Star and hash are standard DTMF keys used in menus, voicemail, and conference PIN entry.
Does this work offline?
Yes. Tones are synthesized live with the Web Audio API on your device.
