Decimal vs binary units

Storage makers use decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. Operating systems traditionally use binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows about 931 GiB in Windows. Use the toggle above to switch KB/MB/GB between the 1000 and 1024 definitions.

Bits vs bytes

Network speeds are quoted in bits per second (Mbps), while file sizes use bytes. There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide by 8 to go from bits to bytes.

Storage Converter FAQs

How many MB in a GB?
1,000 MB decimal (as storage makers define it), or 1,024 MiB binary (as Windows shows it).
KB vs KiB?
KB = 1,000 bytes (SI decimal). KiB = 1,1024 bytes (IEC binary). Same pattern for MB/MiB, GB/GiB.
How many bits in a byte?
8 bits per byte.
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The drive holds 1 trillion bytes (decimal TB). Windows divides by 1024^4, showing ~931 GiB, and labels it GB.
How many GB in a TB?
1,000 GB decimal, or 1,024 GiB binary.
