Good to know: BMP is uncompressed, so the download will be much larger than your AVIF file. That is normal for this format.

Why BMP files are so big

BMP stores every pixel as raw color data with no compression at all. A photo that fits in 300 KB as AVIF can balloon to 10 MB or more as BMP, which is exactly why the format survives mainly for compatibility with older Windows programs.

What happens when you convert

Your AVIF image is decoded in the browser and its pixels are written out as a standard 24-bit BMP, flattened onto a white background. The result is pixel-faithful but large, and opens anywhere BMP is accepted.

AVIF to BMP FAQs

Why convert AVIF to BMP?
BMP is the classic Windows bitmap format. Some older software, embedded systems and simple image pipelines only accept BMP, so this gives you a compatible file.
Why is the BMP file so large?
BMP stores pixels uncompressed, so a photo that was a few hundred kilobytes as AVIF can become several megabytes as BMP. That is normal for this format.
Will BMP keep my image quality?
Yes. BMP is lossless, so every pixel from the AVIF source is preserved exactly. The tradeoff is file size, not quality.
Does BMP support transparency?
The BMP files made here are 24-bit with no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened to white before saving.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with local code. Your files never leave your device.
