Formula: z = (x - mu) / sigma. About 68% of normal data falls within z = +/-1, 95% within +/-1.96.

Standardizing a value

A z-score subtracts the mean and divides by the standard deviation, converting any measurement into units of sigma. A score of 115 on a test with mean 100 and sigma 15 becomes z = +1.0: exactly one standard deviation above average.

Reading the percentile

For roughly normal data, the z-score maps to a percentile through the standard normal curve: z = 1.0 beats about 84% of values, z = 1.96 marks the top 2.5%. The tool estimates this percentile for every result.

Z-Score Calculator FAQs

What is the z-score of 115 with mean 100 and SD 15?
+1.0. The value sits exactly one standard deviation above the mean; the defaults are preloaded.
What is the z-score formula?
z = (x - mu) / sigma. Subtract the mean, divide by the standard deviation.
What does a negative z-score mean?
The value is below the mean. z = -2 means two standard deviations below average.
What percentile is z = 1.96?
About the 97.5th percentile: only 2.5% of normal data lies above it. That is why 1.96 is the classic 95% confidence cutoff.
Is my data sent to a server?
