Formula: Weighted average = sum(value x weight) / sum(weights). Weights need not add to 1.

Weights set the influence

Multiply each value by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight. A final exam worth 50% moves the average far more than a quiz worth 5%. The default example gives 90x0.5 + 80x0.3 + 70x0.2 = 83.

Weights need not sum to one

Any weights work: points, credits, or percentages. The tool divides by the actual weight total, so 50/30/20 gives the same answer as 0.5/0.3/0.2. Negative weights are allowed but usually signal a data error.

Weighted Average FAQs

What is the weighted average of 90, 80, 70 with weights 0.5, 0.3, 0.2?
83. These are preloaded: 45 + 24 + 14 = 83.
How do I compute a final grade with weights?
List each score in Values and its weight (percent or points) in Weights, one per line. The tool matches them by position.
Do weights have to add up to 100%?
No. The formula divides by the actual sum of weights, so any scale works: 50/30/20 behaves exactly like 0.5/0.3/0.2.
What if I have more values than weights?
The tool warns you. Every value needs exactly one weight, matched by position, so add the missing one.
Is my grade data uploaded?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and never leaves the page.
