What a web manifest does

The manifest tells browsers your site is an installable app: its name, icons, launch URL, display mode and theme colors. With a manifest plus a service worker and HTTPS, users get an install prompt and your app opens full-screen like a native app. This generator builds the JSON so you do not have to memorize the spec.

Icons and linking

Attach your PNG icons and their pixel sizes are detected automatically; include at least 192x192 and 512x512 for full installability. Download the file as manifest.webmanifest, serve it from your site root, and reference it with a link tag in your HTML head.

Manifest Generator FAQs

What makes a PWA installable?
A valid manifest with name, icons (including 192px and 512px), a start_url and display mode, served over HTTPS alongside a registered service worker with a fetch handler.
Which icon sizes do I need?
At minimum 192x192 and 512x512 PNGs. Maskable icons with padding are recommended so Android can shape them; aim for 512x512 maskable too.
What is the difference between name and short_name?
Name appears in install prompts and app stores; short_name is used on the home screen where space is tight. Keep short_name under 12 characters.
Which display mode should I choose?
Standalone is the common choice: it hides browser UI for an app-like feel. Use fullscreen for games and minimal-ui if you want to keep back/forward buttons.
Do I still need apple-touch-icon for iOS?
Yes. iOS has limited manifest support, so keep a 180x180 apple-touch-icon link tag for home-screen icons on iPhones and iPads.
