Add or remove
Add VAT starts from the price before tax and shows the tax-inclusive total, the way shops quote prices. Remove VAT starts from the price you paid and works backwards to the net price, which is what businesses need for bookkeeping.
One tool, many taxes
The math is identical for VAT, GST and percentage-based sales tax: it is always a rate applied to a base. Just type the rate that applies where you are.
Multiply the net price by (1 + rate/100). At 20% VAT, a $100 net price becomes $100 x 1.20 = $120.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate/100). At 20% VAT, a $120 gross price is $120 / 1.20 = $100 net, so $20 was VAT.
What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?
They are all consumption taxes charged as a percentage. VAT and GST are collected in stages along the supply chain; US sales tax is usually charged once at the final sale. The calculator math is the same.
What VAT rate should I use?
Use the rate for your country and product type: the UK standard rate is 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, and Indonesia's PPN is 11%. Some goods qualify for reduced rates.
