Summary versus large image cards

summary shows a small square thumbnail beside the text, good for articles where the words matter most. summary_large_image shows a full-width 1200 by 628 banner above the text, which wins far more attention in a busy timeline. Most publishers default to the large card.

How X reads your tags

When someone posts your URL, X's crawler fetches the page and reads the twitter: tags from the head. It caches the card for about a week, so after changing tags use the Card Validator to force a refresh instead of waiting.

Twitter Card Maker FAQs

What image size works best?
1200 by 628 pixels for large-image cards, under 5 MB. Smaller images get upscaled and look soft; much larger ones waste bandwidth since X downsamples them anyway.
Why is my card not showing on X?
Three usual causes: the tags are missing or malformed, the image URL is unreachable from the public internet, or X cached an older version. Validate the URL in X's Card Validator to see the exact error.
Do I still need Open Graph tags?
Yes. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image when twitter: tags are missing, and other platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn only read Open Graph. Ship both sets.
Can the image be a relative URL?
No, it must be an absolute https URL that X's crawler can fetch without login. Relative paths and localhost URLs silently produce a text-only card.
How often does X refresh cached cards?
Roughly every 7 days, or immediately when you re-validate the URL in the Card Validator. During a launch, validate right after deploying new tags.
