Triple DES encrypt and decrypt

Encrypt and decrypt text with Triple DES in your browser. Triple DES applies the DES cipher three times for legacy compatibility.

Input

Triple DES in EDE mode with an OpenSSL-style key derivation from your passphrase.

The crypto library loads from a CDN on first use, then everything runs locally. Nothing you type is uploaded.
Triple DES

The result appears below. Keep the full ciphertext string to decrypt.

DES applied three times

Triple DES (3DES) encrypts with DES, decrypts with a second key, then encrypts with a third (or first) key: EDE mode. With three independent keys it offers 112 bits of effective security, rescuing DES after its 56-bit keys fell to brute force in the late 1990s.

Retired but lingering

NIST disallowed 3DES for new applications after 2023, and Sweet32 showed its 64-bit blocks leak data in high-volume use. It survives in legacy payment systems and old VPNs. Use AES for anything new; this tool exists for decrypting legacy data and learning.

TripleDES Cipher FAQs

Is Triple DES secure?
Marginally. 112-bit effective security is below the modern 128-bit bar, and Sweet32 attacks exploit its small 64-bit blocks. Fine for legacy interop, not for new designs.
What is EDE mode?
Encrypt-Decrypt-Encrypt with up to three keys. With one key repeated it degrades to single DES; with two or three distinct keys you get the full Triple DES strength.
Why is my ciphertext Base64?
CryptoJS outputs the OpenSSL-compatible format (salted, Base64) by default. Paste the full string back to decrypt.
Triple DES vs AES?
AES is faster, stronger (128+ bit keys, 128-bit blocks) and universally recommended. Choose Triple DES only when the other side requires it.
Private?
Yes, encryption runs locally via a CDN-loaded library; keys and plaintext never leave the browser.
