Average the bases

A trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides, the bases. Averaging them gives the width of an equivalent rectangle, and multiplying by the height (the perpendicular distance between the bases) gives the area: ((a + b) / 2) x h.

The midsegment shortcut

The midsegment joins the midpoints of the non-parallel sides, and its length equals the average of the bases. So the area is also midsegment x height, a handy check that the tool shows for you.

Trapezoid Area FAQs

What is the area of a trapezoid with bases 8 and 12, height 5?
((8 + 12) / 2) x 5 = 50. These are the default values, so the answer shows immediately.
What is the formula for trapezoid area?
Area = (a + b) / 2 x h, where a and b are the two parallel bases and h is the perpendicular height between them.
Does it matter which base is a or b?
No. The formula adds them, so the order does not change the result.
What is the midsegment of a trapezoid?
The segment joining the midpoints of the legs. Its length is the average of the bases, and area = midsegment x height.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The area is computed in your browser with JavaScript.
