How detection works

The tool first checks the Unicode script of your text: Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese characters, Devanagari and others each narrow the field immediately. For Latin-script text it scores your words against stopword lists from 13 languages, including Indonesian and Malay, and ranks the best matches with a confidence bar.

Accuracy tips

Two or more full sentences give the most reliable result. Very short phrases, heavy slang, or text mixing two languages can confuse any heuristic detector. Closely related languages like Indonesian and Malay legitimately overlap, so check the runner-up scores too.

Language Detector FAQs

How accurate is the detector?
Very good on a paragraph or more of natural text in a supported language. Short fragments under a sentence often lack enough signal for any detector, human or machine.
Which languages are supported?
Script-level detection covers Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Devanagari, Thai, Hebrew, Tamil and Georgian. Word-level scoring covers 13 Latin-script languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Indonesian and Malay.
Can it tell Indonesian and Malay apart?
It tries, but the two share most vocabulary, so results may flip between them. A longer sample with distinctive words improves the call.
Does the detector need an internet connection?
No. Detection is a pure heuristic running in your browser with no API calls and no uploads.
Can it detect multiple languages in one text?
No, it reports the single best match. For mixed-language text, split the parts and check each separately.
