How conversion works

The file is decoded (auto-detecting UTF-8, UTF-16 LE/BE and BOMs), then line breaks are normalized to your chosen style: LF for Unix, CRLF for Windows, or legacy CR. Finally it is re-encoded in the target encoding, with or without a byte-order mark.

When you need this

Scripts edited on Windows break on Linux servers because of CRLF; old tools choke on BOMs; and some Windows programs demand UTF-16. Converting here fixes the file without installing anything.

Text File Converter FAQs

Will it damage binary files?
Only use it on text files. Decoding a binary file as text will corrupt it; the file picker filters to text types to help.
What is a BOM and do I want one?
A byte-order mark is an invisible header some Windows apps expect. Most modern tools prefer no BOM; add it only if a specific program demands it.
Does it change the file content?
Only line breaks and encoding. Characters are preserved; non-BMP characters are limited to the Basic Multilingual Plane in UTF-16 output.
Why did my CSV break in Excel?
Excel on Windows often wants CRLF with a UTF-8 BOM. Convert with those settings and it should open cleanly.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Reading and conversion happen entirely in your browser.
