How syllables are estimated

The counter groups vowel sounds in each word, then applies English spelling rules: silent final e is dropped, consonant-plus-le endings keep their syllable, and -ed after t or d adds one. A small exception list fixes tricky words like "rhythm".

Accuracy note

English spelling is irregular, so this is a close estimate, not a phonetic analysis. It is right on the vast majority of common words, which is plenty for poem meter checks, lyric writing and readability formulas.

Syllable Counter FAQs

Why do poets use syllable counts?
Forms like haiku (5-7-5) and limericks run on strict syllable patterns. Counting by hand is slow; the per-word breakdown makes meter visible.
What is syllables-per-word good for?
Readability formulas such as Flesch-Kincaid use it: fewer syllables per word generally means easier text.
Why is a word's count wrong?
Irregular spellings and loanwords break the rules. The exception list covers the most common misses.
Does it count numbers?
Digit strings are skipped; only letter sequences are counted as words.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting runs entirely in your browser.
