How the panel count is calculated

Daily energy in watt hours is divided by the energy one panel produces per day, which is panel wattage times peak sun hours times a real world derate of 80 percent. The result rounds up because you cannot install part of a panel, so small systems often end up slightly oversized.

What are peak sun hours

Peak sun hours measure the day's total solar energy as equivalent hours of full 1,000 W per square meter sun. Five peak sun hours does not mean five hours of daylight; most locations get 3 to 6 depending on latitude, season and cloud cover.

Solar Panel Sizer FAQs

How many solar panels do I need for 10 kWh per day?
About 6 panels of 450W with 5 peak sun hours: 10,000 / (5 x 450 x 0.8) = 5.6, rounded up to 6. Enter your own numbers above.
What size inverter do I need?
Size the inverter near the array's total wattage. A 2.7 kW array pairs with a 3 kW inverter, and off grid systems should handle your peak simultaneous load.
How much roof space do solar panels need?
A residential panel is about 1.1 by 2.1 meters. Six panels need roughly 14 square meters of unshaded roof, plus access margins.
Should I oversize my solar array?
Slightly, yes. Panels degrade about 0.5 percent per year and winter sun is weaker, so 10 to 20 percent extra capacity keeps the system meeting demand over its life.
Does this include battery storage?
No, this sizes the panel array only. Off grid systems need batteries sized for your daily use times the days of autonomy you want, plus an inverter and charge controller.
