The SMSTO format

Scanning writes an SMSTO:number:message payload that phone cameras understand natively. iOS and Android both open the messaging app addressed to your number with the message pre-filled, ready to send.

Where to use it

Useful wherever WhatsApp is not universal: printed flyers, event posters, and in-store signs for feedback, RSVPs, and keyword contests. SMS works on every phone with no app install.

SMS QR FAQs

Will this work on iPhones and Android?
Yes. Both recognize the SMSTO format and open the default messaging app with the number and text filled in.
Is the message sent automatically?
No. The message is only pre-filled; the person scanning reviews it and presses send themselves.
Do I need the country code?
Recommended, so the code works for visitors with foreign SIM cards. Use digits only, no plus sign.
Can the message contain emojis?
It can, but some older phones display them poorly in this context. Plain text is the safest choice.
Is my number sent anywhere?
No. The QR is generated locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
