How slug generation works

The tool lowercases your title, strips accents (cafe from café), removes punctuation and symbols, then joins the remaining words with hyphens. Leading and trailing separators are trimmed so the slug is clean.

An optional max length cuts the slug at a word boundary instead of mid-word, keeping URLs readable when headlines are long.

Writing good slugs

Short slugs rank and share better: keep the core keywords and drop filler words. Hyphens are the standard word separator; underscores work but are not treated as separators by Google.

Slugs should be permanent. Changing a published slug breaks existing links unless you set up redirects, so generate carefully before publishing.

Slug Generator FAQs

Why hyphens instead of underscores?
Google treats hyphens as word separators but not underscores, so my-page reads as two words while my_page reads as one.
Are non-English characters removed?
Accented Latin letters are transliterated (é to e). Other scripts are stripped; for CJK or Arabic titles, consider keeping the original words and URL-encoding them instead.
How long should a slug be?
Aim for under 60 characters with 3 to 5 meaningful words. The max-length option trims longer titles at a word boundary.
Can I use this for filenames too?
Yes. Slugs make safe, portable filenames with no spaces or special characters that break scripts and servers.
Is my title sent to a server?
No. Slug generation runs entirely in your browser.
