Why shoe sizes differ

Sizing systems grew up independently: the US and UK use barleycorn-based scales with different zero points, the EU uses Paris points (two-thirds of a centimeter), and Japan simply uses foot length in centimeters. That is why the same foot is a US 9, a UK 8 and an EU 42.5-ish, and why conversions are lookup tables rather than formulas.

How to get the best fit

Measure your foot in centimeters in the evening, when feet are slightly larger, and match the JP column. If you land between sizes or the brand runs small, size up: a little room beats cramped toes.

Shoe Size Converter FAQs

What is the most reliable size system?
Japanese (cm), because it measures actual foot length instead of an arbitrary scale. Measure your foot and match that number directly.
Are US men's and women's sizes the same?
No. US women's sizes run about 1.5 larger than men's, so a women's 8 is roughly a men's 6.5 in length.
Why do sizes vary between brands?
Each brand uses its own last (the foot-shaped mold), and lasts differ in width and toe shape. Always check the brand's own chart for expensive shoes.
Should I size up or down between sizes?
Up, in most cases. Feet swell during the day and during activity, and tight shoes cause far more problems than slightly roomy ones.
Does this cover kids' sizes?
No. This converter covers adult sizes only; children's sizing follows different scales.
