SHA-512 hash generator

Generate the SHA-512 digest of any text with the Web Crypto API. SHA-512 is the strongest SHA-2 variant, producing a 128-character hexadecimal digest.

Input

SHA-512 digests are 128 hexadecimal characters. Computed with the Web Crypto API.

Needs a secure context (HTTPS or localhost) for the Web Crypto API. Nothing is uploaded.

How SHA-512 works

SHA-512 processes messages in 1024-bit blocks through 80 rounds of a 64-bit compression function, starting from eight fixed 64-bit initial values. The result is a 512-bit digest shown as 128 hexadecimal characters. Its 64-bit operations make it particularly fast on modern 64-bit CPUs, often faster per byte than SHA-256.

Security margin

SHA-512 offers 256 bits of collision resistance, the highest in the SHA-2 family, and has withstood nearly two decades of cryptanalysis without a practical attack. It is the conservative choice for long-term signatures, certificate fingerprints and file integrity where digest size is not a constraint.

SHA-512 Hash FAQs

When should I use SHA-512 instead of SHA-256?
When you want the maximum SHA-2 security margin, or you hash on 64-bit hardware where SHA-512 is actually faster. For most checksums SHA-256 is enough; SHA-512 shines in signatures and long-lived integrity records.
Is SHA-512 slower than SHA-256?
On 64-bit processors SHA-512 is often faster per byte because it processes 128 bytes per block instead of 64. On 32-bit or embedded devices SHA-256 can win.
What is SHA-512/256?
A truncated variant of SHA-512 that outputs 256 bits with different initial values, designed to avoid length-extension attacks. This tool computes full SHA-512.
Why is HTTPS required?
The Web Crypto API needs a secure context, so the page must be served over HTTPS or opened on localhost for the digest to compute.
Can two inputs share a SHA-512 hash?
In theory yes, but finding such a collision would take about 2^256 operations, which is physically infeasible. No SHA-512 collision has ever been found.
