SHA-224 hash generator

Generate the SHA-224 digest of any text in your browser. SHA-224 is a 224-bit member of the SHA-2 family, shown as 56 hexadecimal characters.

Input

SHA-224 digests are 56 hexadecimal characters. Computed with the CryptoJS library, locally.

The crypto library loads from a CDN on first use, then everything runs locally. Nothing you type is uploaded.

SHA-224 in the SHA-2 family

SHA-224 is part of the SHA-2 family standardized by NIST in FIPS 180-4. It runs the SHA-256 compression function with different initial values and truncates the result to 224 bits, giving a 56-character hexadecimal digest. The distinct initialization keeps SHA-224 domain-separated from SHA-256.

When to use it

SHA-224 is a solid choice where a shorter digest than SHA-256 is wanted without giving up SHA-2 security, for example in constrained protocols and some certificate or IPsec contexts. For general checksums and file verification, SHA-256 remains the more common default.

SHA-224 Hash FAQs

How is SHA-224 different from SHA-256?
Both use the same 64-round compression function, but SHA-224 starts from different initial hash values and its 256-bit result is truncated to 224 bits (56 hex characters instead of 64). The distinct initialization means SHA-224 is not just a chopped SHA-256.
Is SHA-224 still secure?
Yes. Like SHA-256, SHA-224 has no practical collision or preimage attacks. It offers 112 bits of collision resistance, which is considered safe for the foreseeable future.
Why would I pick SHA-224 over SHA-256?
The shorter 28-byte digest saves space in bandwidth or storage constrained protocols while keeping the full SHA-2 security margin. Unless you have such a constraint, SHA-256 is the more standard pick.
Does this tool work offline?
After the page and its small crypto library load, everything runs locally in your browser. No text is uploaded, so hashing keeps working without a connection.
What does the output look like?
A fixed 56-character hexadecimal string for every input. The SHA-224 of 'abc', for example, begins with 23097d22. Any input length maps to exactly 56 hex characters.
